Since discovery in 1878 by a tinsmith and a local photographer, visitors by the millions have made Luray Caverns the most popular cave in Eastern America and an internationally acclaimed destination beneath Virginia’s storied Shenandoah Valley, this “must see” U.S. Natural Landmark for your discovery. One hour tours, from well-lighted, paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high. Enormous chambers are filled with towering columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. Located in the Cathedral is the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the world’s largest musical instrument. Stalactites covering 3 1/2 acres of the surrounding caverns produce tones of symphonic quality when electronically tapped by rubber-tipped mallets. This one-of-a-kind instrument was conceived by Mr. Leland W. Sprinkle of Springfield, Virginia, a mathematician and electronics scientist at the Pentagon.
The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum exhibit is a tour of milestones in transportation, including authentically restored cars, carriages, coaches and costumes, dating from 1725 to 1941. The collection was assembled in the 1950s under the direction of H. T. N. Graves, President of Luray Caverns Corporation. What started as one man’s fascination with antique transportation led to a museum that both preserves and explains the history of travel. The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum entrance is included with paid admission into the Luray Caverns. It opens at 9 am daily and closes 1 1/2 hours after the last Caverns tour.
A have-to-see excursion perfect for a small daytime outing for you and your family.
